Counseling Services

Substance Abuse Foundation of Long Beach

The Substance Abuse Foundation's approach is holistic – taking into account the many life challenges of people with substance abuse problems, as well as family members and others in the community who face various life challenges.

We provide many low-cost counseling services that are available independent of drug/alcohol treatment – or may be included as part of an individual’s treatment program. These include Specialized Outpatient Groups and Private Individual Counseling Services.

Specialized Outpatient Groups

Substance Abuse Foundation’s specialized outpatient groups are designed to help people maintain long-term recovery; improve their lives; improve their interpersonal skills; mend family relationships; and develop new skills for living.

A trained facilitator leads each group in a participatory educational group, followed by group counseling where people reflect on what they have learned.

Individuals may participate in outpatient services for up to one year. The length of services and number of groups is determined by each individual’s needs. However, each specialized outpatient activity has a designated number of group sessions, and some participants may be required to comply with County of Los Angeles attendance requirements.

Group fees are paid at the time of service delivery and are determined by a sliding scale, based upon ability to pay. Contact us to learn about group counseling fees, or if your HMO or insurance company will cover the cost of group counseling services.

Specialized Outpatient Groups include:

  • Domestic Violence: The Substance Abuse Foundation offers two 52-week group sessions at separate times for batterers and for victims of domestic violence. The batterer’s program, which meets Los Angeles County Probation Department guidelines, is to stop domestic violence by holding the batterer responsible for violence in a relationship. The goal of the victims’ group is to empower individuals to break free of the abusive cycle.
  • Anger Management: The Substance Abuse Foundation offers a 52-week Anger Management program, where people learn to identify problem anger and gain skills to overcome it. The program meets the requirements for court-ordered participants.
  • Child Abuse Prevention: The Substance Abuse Foundation’s 52-week Child Abuse prevention program helps people understand and break the cycle of family violence and learn about effective parenting models. This program is certified for Los Angeles County Probation “PC273.1 participants.
  • Parenting Education: This 52-week program helps parents and guardians to learn about the stages of child development, how to communicate with their children and how to build trusting and healthy relationships with their children. The program meets requirements for court-ordered participants.
  • Bringing Up Healthy Children: This program includes information on healthy pregnancy, child development and children’s health/nutrition needs.
  • Relapse Prevention: This program helps prevent drug/alcohol relapse by helping people to recognize early warning signs and avoid situations that may put them at risk.
  • Drug and Alcohol Education: This 20-week program educates people about the cycle of addiction and its downward spiral, effects of drug abuse on the family, medical risks, legal issues, treatment modalities and community resources that promote recovery. The program is a certified drug diversion program for first-time offenders referred for PC1000 services in Los Angeles County.
  • Framework for Recovery: This group helps people to avoid self-defeating thoughts and behaviors that are negatively impacting their lives.
  • Self-Esteem: This group helps people to defeat their inner critic and feel better about themselves.
  • Feelings: This group helps people to identify and better cope with their emotions and feelings, such as anger, pride, fear and grief.
  • “Letting Go” and Forgiveness: This group helps people to forgive themselves and others, and to overcome resentments.
  • Building Healthy Boundaries: This group helps people set and maintain personal boundaries (limits) when interacting with others – and thereby move forward in their lives.
