Equal Opportunity Employer

The Substance Abuse Foundation of Long Beach is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We treat all employees equally, based on merit, competence, and qualifications, without being influenced by race, religion, sex, ethnic group identification, age, marital status, sexual orientation, medical condition, national origin, mental disability, physical disability; HIV/AIDS status, or veteran status. Substance Abuse Foundation also complies with all laws regarding reasonable accommodation for handicapped and disabled employees.

Our commitment to equal opportunity employment applies to employee recruitment, hiring, training, promotion, transfer and termination.

Job Opportunities

Substance Abuse Foundation has a long history of recruiting and hiring people who share in our commitment to excellence in providing drug and alcohol treatment services, housing and supportive services for people who wish to recover from drug/alcohol abuse and rebuild their lives as productive members of society.

We are pleased to employ dedicated and experienced mental health professionals, drug/alcohol counselors, case managers, intake workers, discharge planners, group facilitators and program directors, who provide program services daily at our treatment and counseling facilities in Long Beach, California.  We also employ a full range of support staff in the following areas: administration, medical records, accounting, grant writing, quality control, information technology, human resources, training, community outreach/marketing, fundraising, transportation, maintenance and a facility director.

Substance Abuse Foundation accepts résumés for all positions and will contact applicants as positions become available. E-mail your résumé to Substance Abuse Foundation.  (No phone or mail inquiries, please.)

Internship opportunities also are available for students who need professional supervision by a licensed mental health professional and for other students who want an opportunity for training.  We welcome student interns in all aspects of program services and administration.  Eligible students must be enrolled in an institution of higher learning or a specialized certification program.  All interns are trained and supervised by a staff member.

Substance Abuse Foundation also is privileged to contract with professional consultants, including a psychiatrist specializing in addiction medicine, a registered dietitian and a pharmacist.  These independent contractors are not employees and are not eligible for any benefits or other employment terms, conditions or privileges

The Executive Director hires staff and selects consultants, interns and volunteers in accordance with approved duty statements and prescribed qualifications and levels of experience.  Substance Abuse Foundation strives for a culturally and linguistically competent staff; some positions require bilingual (English and Spanish) skills.

All employees working with adolescent outpatients (under age 18) will be fingerprinted, and Substance Abuse Foundation will obtain a clearance prior to placement of employees that are involved in any youth programs.

Volunteer Opportunities

Many volunteers contribute their time and talent to assisting the Substance Abuse Foundation, and we are grateful for the many volunteers that assist in all aspects of program services and administration. Volunteers do not receive benefits or compensation.

Drug-Free and Smoke-Free Workplace

The Substance Abuse Foundation operates a drug-free workplace. As such, the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, possession, or use of a controlled substance is prohibited in our workplace and will result in employee termination. We maintain a strict relapse policy for employees, interns, volunteers and consultants, who have a chemical dependency history, drink alcohol or use any mind or mood-altering substances or take over-the-counter medications containing alcohol while employed at this facility, or are found with any related paraphernalia while at the Foundation. They will be immediately referred for treatment. The same policy applies to the use of any mind-or mood-altering prescriptions that are not pre-approved by the Executive Director. It is the responsibility of the staff member, volunteer, intern or consultant to receive pre-approval from the Executive Director of such medications.

Substance Abuse Foundation has urinalysis equipment on-site. Employees, interns, board members, consultants and volunteers may be urine tested randomly or any time that staff suspects that an individual may have relapsed.

Smoke-Free Workplace

The Substance Abuse Foundation is committed to a Smoke-Free Workplace and treatment facility. “No-Smoking” signs are posted in all offices/facilities, and smoking is only permitted outdoors in designated areas. Our organization also is committed to preventing/reducing tobacco-related disease. We post information at our facilities on the health hazards of tobacco-smoking and second-hand smoke. We also encourage employees, interns, volunteers, clients and consultants who want to stop smoking to access free, community based smoking-cessation counseling and workshops.

Code of Conduct

The Substance Abuse Foundation adheres to a Code of Conduct & Professional Ethics that applies to employees, volunteers, interns and consultants.

All new employees, volunteers, interns and consultants participate in orientation to acquaint them with the Substance Abuse Foundation’s history, mission, vision, treatment philosophy, goals and objectives, programs, standards of performance, rules, expectations, policies and procedures, safety procedures, infection control, quality control, resident rights, confidentiality and more.
